Email follow-up app
Follow up when they’re warm. Not when a timer says so.
The short answer.
An email follow-up app is software that helps you chase emails that did not get a reply — by reminding you, drafting the next message, or sending it for you. For Gmail, MailSenseAI is a free Chrome extension that drafts the follow-up based on what the recipient did: whether they opened it, how many times, whether they clicked a link, and whether they replied.
Most follow-up tools fire on a timer: “if no reply in 3 days, send this.” MailSenseAI follows the signal instead, and the AI writes a draft that you review and send — it is not an autoresponder. See it in action on the demo page.

Timer-based or signal-based?
There are two ways an email follow-up app can decide when to chase. The difference decides whether your follow-up lands on a warm thread or a cold one.
| Approach | Timer-based | Signal-based (MailSenseAI) |
|---|---|---|
| What triggers the follow-up | A countdown: “no reply in 3 days” | What the recipient actually did with the email |
| Knows whether it was opened | Usually not part of the rule | Yes — opens, and how many |
| Knows whether a link was clicked | Usually not part of the rule | Yes — clicks are part of the read |
| Knows whether the thread was answered | Only to stop the sequence | Yes — replies end the chase |
| Who writes the message | A template you wrote in advance | An AI draft written for that thread |
| Who presses send | Often the software, on schedule | You — every draft is reviewed first |
This describes the two approaches in general, not any one product. For sourced, dated detail on specific tools, see every comparison and the alternatives roundup.
Why a clock is the wrong trigger.
Three days means different things
An email opened four times in an hour is a different situation from one that was never opened. A timer treats them the same. A signal does not.
A chase can arrive at the worst moment
A follow-up that fires while the recipient is still reading, or after they have already replied elsewhere, reads as noise. Behaviour tells you when the moment is real.
An open is not the whole story
We are careful about this. An open alone is weak evidence, which is why the read weighs opens with clicks and replies. See an open is not intent.
Chasing everything is how you become annoying
Fewer, better-timed follow-ups beat a blanket sequence. Our guide to following up without being annoying covers the tone side of it.
How it works in Gmail.
Signals in a sidebar
Opens, clicks and replies appear next to the conversation inside Gmail, not in a dashboard you have to remember to visit.
A read on each thread
Engagement is weighed into one view of how warm the thread is, so you know which to chase first.
A draft, ready to review
When a thread is warm, the follow-up is already written. You edit it and send it. Nothing goes out without you.
Nothing added to your email
No footer or signature on any plan, and the draft never mentions tracking. The pledge is on the no-footer page.

FAQ
Questions, answered.
- What is an email follow-up app?
- An email follow-up app helps you chase emails that did not get a reply, by reminding you, drafting the next message, or sending it for you. MailSenseAI is a free Chrome extension for Gmail that does this based on behaviour: it tracks opens, clicks and replies, then drafts a follow-up when the thread looks warm.
- Does it send follow-ups automatically?
- No. MailSenseAI writes the follow-up as a draft and you review it and press send yourself. It is not an autoresponder and it never sends an email on your behalf without you. The automation is in the timing and the writing: it tells you which thread to chase and has the message ready.
- Is there a free email follow-up app for Gmail?
- Yes. MailSenseAI’s free plan includes unlimited open, click and reply tracking and 3 AI follow-up drafts a month, with no credit card. Pro is $5/month ($4/month billed annually) and adds unlimited AI drafts and full analytics, with a 14-day free trial. See the pricing page for the full breakdown.
- How is this different from automated follow-up sequences?
- Sequence tools follow a timer: if there is no reply after a set number of days, the next step fires. MailSenseAI follows the signal instead. It knows whether the email was opened, how many times, whether a link was clicked and whether the thread was answered, so the follow-up is suggested when engagement says the person is interested, not when a clock runs out.
- Can the recipient tell I am using a follow-up app?
- Not from the follow-up itself. The AI draft never mentions tracking, so it will not say “I saw you opened this”, because that is a deliberate privacy rule in the product. MailSenseAI also adds no footer or signature to your emails on any plan. If you would rather disclose tracking, there is an optional consent footer you control.
- Does it work outside Gmail?
- MailSenseAI is built for Gmail only. It runs as a Chrome extension inside Gmail, with the live signals in a sidebar next to the conversation, plus a web dashboard at app.mailsenseai.com. Focusing on one mail client is what lets it read the thread accurately.
- What does the AI follow-up draft actually say?
- It writes a short, specific message based on the thread, and you can edit it before sending. Engagement data shapes which thread to chase and why, but it stays on your side: the body of the email never refers to opens, views, clicks or tracking. Read how to follow up without being annoying for the thinking behind the tone.
- Is MailSenseAI well rated?
- MailSenseAI has a 5.0 rating from 5 ratings on the Chrome Web Store. That is a small sample, so treat it as an early signal rather than proof, and watch the demo to judge the product for yourself.
