How Email Open Tracking Works — and How Accurate It Really Is
Email open tracking powers a huge share of modern sales and marketing decisions, and yet most people using it could not explain how it works. Understanding the mechanism matters, because it tells you exactly when to trust an "open" and when to be skeptical.
The tracking pixel, explained
When you send a tracked email, the tool embeds a tiny, transparent 1×1 image — the "tracking pixel" — with a unique URL, something like https://track.example.com/o/abc123.gif. That image is not stored in the email; it is loaded from a server the moment the email is displayed.
When the recipient opens the message, their mail client requests that image from the server. The server logs the request — the timestamp, and often an approximate location and device derived from the request — returns the invisible pixel, and records an "open." That request is the entire signal.
How click tracking works
Click tracking uses a different trick: the tool rewrites the links in your email to route through its own server first. A link to yoursite.com/pricing becomes track.example.com/c/abc123?u=yoursite.com/pricing. When the recipient clicks, the server logs the click and instantly redirects them to the real destination — so fast they never notice the hop.
Why opens are an estimate, not a fact
Because opens depend on an image loading, anything that interferes with image loading distorts the count — in both directions:
- Blocked images = missed opens. Some clients and privacy-conscious users block remote images by default. They read your email, but no pixel loads, so it never registers.
- Pre-loading = phantom opens. This is the big one. Apple Mail Privacy Protection pre-fetches images on Apple servers whether or not the human ever opens the email — inflating opens and destroying the accuracy of open time and location for Apple Mail users.
- Proxied opens hide location. Gmail loads images through Google's image proxy, so the location you see is a Google data center, not the reader. The open is real; the geolocation is not the recipient's.
- Your own opens. Viewing your sent copy can trigger the pixel and count as a false open unless the tool filters sender self-views out.
How Apple Mail Privacy Protection changed everything
Since 2021, Apple Mail routes image requests through Apple's servers and pre-loads them, meaning a large chunk of "opens" from Apple Mail users are machine-generated, not human. Good tracking tools now detect the Apple pre-fetch signature and filter those phantom opens out so your numbers reflect real reads. If your tracker still counts them, your open rate is quietly inflated.
How to read opens correctly
- Trust clicks and replies far more than opens — they require a deliberate human action.
- Weight repeated opens over a single one; a burst of opens is a strong buying signal.
- Ignore the geolocation on Gmail-proxied opens; it points at a data center, not a person.
- Use open rate as a trend line for deliverability and relevance, not as a precise headcount.
