Free Email Trackers for Gmail: What “Free” Actually Means on Each Plan

TrackingThe MailSenseAI Team4 min read

"Free" is the most overloaded word in this category. Every Gmail email tracker has a free plan, and behind that single word sit at least five completely different offers — one of which is a seven-day trial. Here is what each actually gives you, read from the vendors’ own pricing pages and verified in August 2026.

The five kinds of “free”

1. Free, but branded

Mailtrack and Mailsuite (the same product line) give you unlimited tracked emails on the free plan — but count only the first open of each message, cap link tracking at ten emails, limit you to 100 sends a month, and append a “Sent with…” signature to everything you send. Removing that signature is a paid feature starting at $4.99/month. Numbers and detail: vs Mailtrack, vs Mailsuite.

The first-open-only limit is the one people miss. It quietly removes the most useful signal in the whole dataset — a recipient coming back to your email three times is the pattern that says "this is being considered," and on the free plan you cannot see it.

2. Free, but time-boxed

Yesware’s Free Forever plan includes basic open tracking, but only for emails sent in the last 24 hours, plus ten campaign recipients a month. Since a meaningful share of replies arrive on day three or later, a 24-hour window means the plan cannot answer the question you installed it for. Detail: vs Yesware.

3. Free, but metered

HubSpot’s free tools include email tracking through its Gmail extension, capped at 200 sales notifications a month for free and unassigned users. Hit the cap and the activity feed stops surfacing opens until it resets on the first of the following month; unlimited notifications require a paid Sales Hub seat. Right Inbox’s free “Limited” plan is far tighter still: five emails a month across tracking, mail merge, reminders, and send-later, solo use only. Detail: vs HubSpot, vs Right Inbox.

4. Free, but it is a CRM

Streak’s free plan genuinely includes email and link tracking with no published tracking cap, plus mail merge at 50 sends a day. The cost is not money, it is scope: you are installing a CRM, designing pipelines, and living inside a much larger tool to get an open notification. Paid tiers start at $49/user/month. Detail: vs Streak.

5. Free, but it is a trial

Saleshandy lists a seven-day free trial rather than a permanent free outreach plan, with Outreach Starter at $25/month billed annually. It is a cold-outreach platform rather than a tracker, and priced accordingly. Detail: vs Saleshandy.

What to check before you commit a workflow

  1. Is it every open, or the first one? This is the most commonly hidden limit and the most consequential.
  2. Is there a monthly ceiling — on emails, on notifications, or on days?
  3. Does anything get added to your outgoing email? Check the free tier specifically; it is a free-plan behaviour.
  4. Are clicks included, or opens only? Clicks are the strongest signal and the first thing free plans restrict.
  5. Does it filter fake opens? Apple Mail Privacy Protection pre-loads images and security gateways scan links. A tracker that counts those is reporting fiction — see how open tracking actually works.

Where MailSenseAI sits

Unlimited tracked emails, every open rather than the first, unlimited link click tracking, reply detection, and no signature on your emails — on the free plan, permanently, with no credit card. Pro at $5/month adds unlimited AI follow-up drafts, trend analytics, recipients ranked by engagement, and the Chase Now worklist. The free plan is funded by Pro subscriptions rather than by advertising in your outbox, which is a promise we wrote down with a date on it.

That is a claim, so here is the check: the full eight-tool table — free-plan limits, signature behaviour, cheapest paid plan, each sourced from the vendor’s own pricing page — is on the best email tracking extensions for Gmail. Read the row for whichever tool you are considering, including ours.

The honest summary

There is no free lunch in this category, only different bills. Some tools bill you in volume caps, some in a 24-hour window, some in the size of the product you have to adopt, and some in the line at the bottom of your emails. Work out which bill you mind least — and if the answer is "I mind the one my clients can see," that narrows it down fast.
