They Opened Your Email and Did Not Reply. Now What?

Follow-upsThe MailSenseAI Team4 min read

The notification arrives: your proposal was opened. Then nothing. This is the most common situation in all of sales email, and the most commonly mishandled — usually by treating the open as far more meaningful than it is.

A narrowing funnel of five email engagement stages, from widest to narrowest: sent, delivered, opened, clicked, replied.SentDeliveredOpenedClickedReplied
Each stage is a stronger signal of intent than the one above it.

What an open actually tells you

One thing, precisely: the message was rendered on a screen at a particular moment. Not that it was read carefully, not that they are considering it, not that they are interested. The email was on a display.

It is a timing signal, and that is genuinely valuable. It is not an interest signal, and treating it as one produces the pushy follow-up that kills the deal. The distinction, at length, is in an open is not intent.

Reading the pattern

  • One open, no reply. Weak. They saw it and moved on. Follow the normal schedule and change the angle — the framing did not land.
  • Two or three opens over several days. Real interest, plus an obstacle. Someone returning unprompted is thinking about it. Your job is to find and remove the blocker, not to repeat the offer.
  • Several opens in one session. Often forwarding or a discussion in progress. Frequently the best moment in the whole cycle to make contact.
  • Opens plus a click. The strongest silent signal available. They went looking for more.
  • Opens that stopped a week ago. It has gone cold. Treat as a new conversation with a new reason.

How fast to move

If somebody is reading your proposal right now, an email arriving in the next few minutes lands in an inbox they are actively looking at. That is the single highest-value moment available, and it beats every day-of-the-week heuristic.

But there is a limit. Replying within seconds of an open is visibly reactive and unsettling — it makes the surveillance obvious. Fifteen to sixty minutes reads as coincidence. Same-day reads as diligence.

The one rule: never mention it

Do not write "I saw you opened this", "I noticed you have been looking at the proposal", or any variant. It is the fastest way to convert a small advantage into a trust problem you cannot repair.

The recipient did not consent to being watched, and being told about it retroactively makes them think about every previous email you sent. Use the signal to choose when to send. Write the email as though you know nothing.

What to send instead

After repeat opens on a proposal

Hi Sam — one thing I should have included in the proposal: the phased option. Rather than the full migration in one go, we can do the checkout path first, measure for a fortnight, then decide on the rest. Smaller commitment, and you see the numbers before the bigger call. Want me to price that version?
Removes the likely obstacle — commitment size — without mentioning the opens

After a click on a pricing link

Hi Priya — I realised I never explained how the tiers map to team size, which is the part that usually matters. For a team of your size it is the middle plan, and the annual option brings it down about 20%. Happy to put together an exact figure if useful.

After a long silence with no opens

Hi Alex — checking this reached you at all, since I know things get filtered. If it is easier, here is the one-line version: we can cut about 1.9s off mobile load time, and the audit takes a day. Worth a look, or is this the wrong quarter?
No opens is weak evidence — this treats delivery as the open question

When no opens is the real story

Do not over-read silence in the tracking data either. Image blocking, MPP filtering, and preview-pane reading all produce genuine reads with no recorded open. If two messages show nothing at all, suspect deliverability before disinterest and check why emails land in spam.

MailSenseAI ranks threads by the signals that actually mean something — repeat opens, clicks and replies — and drafts a follow-up that never references the tracking data. Free and unlimited; the structures for each situation are in 9 follow-up email templates.
