Why Your Email Tracker Shows Multiple Opens (and Which Ones Are Real)

You send one email and the tracker reports eleven opens in ninety seconds. Nobody read your message eleven times. Almost every case of a suspiciously high open count comes from one of a handful of mechanical causes, and separating those from genuine re-reads is the difference between a useful signal and a misleading one.

What open rate actually measures — and the three things that distort it.

Cause 1: the mail client re-fetches the image

The biggest source. Gmail proxies remote images through Google’s own infrastructure, and that proxy does not fetch once and stop. It re-requests on its own schedule — when the message is re-rendered, when a cache entry expires, sometimes several times in quick succession for a single view.

From the tracking server’s side, each of those requests is indistinguishable from a fresh render. A well-built tracker collapses a rapid burst into one open; a naive one reports every request, which is where "five opens the instant I sent it" comes from.

Cause 2: you are seeing your own view

Opening your own Sent copy renders the same message, loads the same pixel, and produces the same request. Because Gmail proxies it, that request arrives looking almost exactly like a recipient open — same infrastructure, same datacenter address.

Suppressing this properly is genuinely difficult and it is where trackers differ most in quality. If your counts jump every time you check a thread, the tool is counting you.

Cause 3: Apple Mail Privacy Protection

Apple pre-loads remote images for mail delivered to Apple Mail, regardless of whether the person opens anything. This produces opens that are entirely machine-generated, typically arriving shortly after delivery and often in a batch.

They are recognisable — the request comes from Apple’s relay infrastructure — so a good tracker filters them out. The consequence is that for those recipients you get no genuine open data at all, which is the trade Apple intended. More detail in Apple Mail Privacy Protection and open tracking.

Cause 4: security scanners

Corporate mail gateways — the kind that sit in front of large-company inboxes — fetch and inspect embedded resources before delivery. That produces an open, sometimes several, typically within seconds of sending and usually from a datacenter rather than an office.

The tell is timing: an open recorded four seconds after you hit send, before any human could plausibly have looked, is a machine. The same scanners also fetch tracked links, which produces the phantom click problem covered in how email click tracking works.

Cause 5: the email was genuinely forwarded

This one is real signal. If your message is forwarded internally, every recipient who renders it triggers the same pixel, attributed to your original message. A proposal that suddenly shows opens from three different places over an afternoon is very likely being circulated — which is usually excellent news.

You cannot distinguish this from one person re-reading with certainty. But the pattern is different: forwarding tends to produce opens spread over hours from varying contexts, while a re-read is a cluster.

Reading the pattern instead of the number

Once you know the causes, the shape of the data tells you more than the total:

  • A burst within seconds of sending — machine. Scanner or prefetch. Ignore it.
  • A tight cluster minutes or hours later — one genuine render, counted several times by the proxy. Treat it as one open.
  • Separate opens hours or days apart — the real thing. This is the pattern that means someone came back, and it is the most valuable signal open tracking produces.
  • Opens continuing after a reply — normal. They are re-reading the thread, often while drafting.

That third pattern is the one worth acting on. Somebody returning to a proposal on day three, unprompted, is telling you something no single open ever does. The argument for weighting engagement this way is in an open is not intent.

What a good tracker should do about it

  1. Collapse rapid repeat requests for the same message into a single open.
  2. Filter known prefetch and scanner sources rather than counting them.
  3. Suppress the sender’s own views of their own sent mail, reliably, without a workaround.
  4. Show the timeline, not just a total — the distribution is where the meaning is.
  5. Report the same number everywhere. A count that differs between two screens of the same product is a bug, and a common one.
